The Art of Living Consciously

December 21, 2014 by Linda Lynch-Johnson

13470957_sWith each passing day we are either doing one of three things — we make progress toward something, or we move away from something, or maybe we just stand still.

What is your choice?

I have traveled through this life making all of the above choices and, in my mind, each one of them has taught me something.

From diagnosis to control

I was following my passion when I was hit with, to me, a devastating disease: fibromyalgia.

This led to developing multiple tumors, one of which destroyed the hearing in my left ear.  Within two years after that I lost both of my parents within a year of each other, and moved across country.

I went into a very deep depression as I dealt with the pain and immobility of my diagnose.

And then, I took a nap.

Sounds like no big deal, right, just a nap? But it was a very different kind of nap: I called it a “death” nap. My whole life sped by in front of me, from infancy to the present — things I was proud of and things that I wasn’t, things that I had accomplished and things I had not.

When I awoke, I was a different person.

I had had an epiphany, I could either be the disease or I could just be someone who had it. I chose in that moment to just be someone who had the disease and my life was changed.

I started focusing on what I could do and not on what I couldn’t. Could I walk a mile? No, but I could walk a block. Could I take a full course of study at college? No, but I could take one course.

And through those tiny steps, I took back control of my life.

Since then, I have undergone numerous surgeries and health challenges, but I have persisted in focusing on finding the pearl in the oyster.

My life has had many twists and turns, dead ends and under construction moments, but perhaps the biggest gift I was given was the opportunity to learn that I controlled the destiny of my life, me, I was totally responsible for how I was going to travel through this time I have in this earthly plane, and what a gift that was.

And now, I wish to share this formula with your audience, to give them the opportunity to envision a new approach for their life, no matter what the challenges. There is a catch phrase that I have always used: “Next?”
